Casco Antiguo (Old Town)

Sound for events in Seville city centre

One of the largest historic centres in Europe and, for anyone putting on events, the most demanding part of the city: restricted access, cobblestones and spaces with centuries of echo.

How we set up here

In the centre, set-up is planned by the hour

Between the Alameda, San Lorenzo, the Alfalfa, Santa Cruz and the Arenal there are dozens of pedestrianised or limited-access streets. The question is not what equipment fits, but what time it is allowed in.

Much of the centre has restricted, camera-controlled traffic, with loading and unloading windows concentrated early in the morning. That shapes everything: if the event is in the afternoon, we set up early that morning; if it is in the morning, we set up the day before. Where vehicles cannot get in, we unload at the nearest permitted point and the equipment goes in by trolley. On cobbled streets, gear with large wheels and well-distributed loads is best, and that trip has to be factored into the set-up time.

Courtyards, cloisters and historic halls

The centre is full of palace-houses with central courtyards, institutional buildings with cloisters and halls with high ceilings. Acoustically they are long spaces with hard surfaces and lots of reverberation: speech turns into echo if you hit it with power. The answer is the opposite approach: small speakers spread out close to the audience, angled downwards, with the level kept in check. For a ceremony or a spoken event in a courtyard, discreet microphones —lavalier or headset— perform far better than a stand microphone a metre and a half away.

Hotel rooftops and terraces

The centre's rooftop terraces are a popular spot for launches and parties. There the problem is twofold: getting the equipment up —lift, last flight of stairs, narrow doors— and containing the sound, because at height it travels unobstructed across the rooftops. So we choose a small, carefully aimed system with very limited bass, and agree a finishing time.

Noise and licences

This is the part of the city with the most homes mixed in with business activity, so level control is not a minor detail. If the venue has a licence and a sound limiter, the system runs below the threshold. You can see the approach in our guide to noise regulations in Seville.

What gets celebrated

Weddings, launches and standing-audience events

The centre is home to the city's most characterful venues, and that attracts events that want to look as good as they sound.

Civil weddings in courtyards and historic buildings are among our most frequent set-ups: a ceremony with discreet microphones and background music, a drinks reception with distributed sound and, if the party carries on, a separate system for dancing. Product launches and cultural events need the same in a shorter format: clear speech, visuals if there is projection, and a look that does not clash with the space. When the venue is beautiful, tripods and visible cables really stand out, so we keep cabling tidy and choose the most discreet equipment possible.

There are also plenty of small-format live performances —flamenco singing, guitar, string quartets— in courtyards and halls, where the aim is to reinforce without it being noticed, plus institutional events with a lectern and PA system in squares and public buildings.

Equipment designed for delicate spaces

Kit that fits through an old doorway, goes up in a lift and does not spoil the photo of the courtyard.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about setting up in the centre

My street is pedestrianised and there is no parking. How do you manage?

Using a loading window, or carrying the equipment in by hand from the nearest authorised point. We just need the exact address to work out the route: that determines the size of the set-up crew and the time needed, not the price of the equipment.

In a courtyard with lots of echo, can speech be made intelligible?

Yes, but with the opposite approach to what you might expect: less power, smaller speakers placed closer to the audience, angled downwards. Turning up the volume in a courtyard only increases the reverberation.

Can there be live music until late in the centre?

It depends on the venue's licence and its authorised hours. In areas surrounded by homes, it is best to plan for the loud part to finish before night-time hours and keep the last hour at low volume.

Can you set up without visible cables or tripods?

To a large extent, yes: cables gathered and taped down, speakers on low stands or resting on surfaces, the control position out of sight and neutral-coloured equipment. What cannot be removed is the power supply; it can be disguised, but it does not disappear.
