Bass reinforcement
Subwoofer rental: the difference between hearing and dancing
The subwoofer handles the part of the sound you feel before you hear it. Without it, a party sounds thin no matter how far you turn up the volume.

What it adds
What a subwoofer is for and when you need one
It is not "more volume". It is a band of frequencies that a normal speaker cannot reproduce with any body, and it is exactly the one that gets people moving.
A full-range speaker reproduces speech and most music reasonably well, but below a certain frequency it runs out of physical excursion: the kick drum loses its punch, the bass turns into a hum and modern music sounds like a small radio. The subwoofer takes care of that low band, and by relieving the main speakers of that work it improves everything else too: speech is clearer and the whole system distorts less.
When you need one
- Whenever there is dancing: wedding party, birthday, debutante ball (puesta de largo), verbena (street party), caseta (fair marquee).
- Always with a DJ. A DJ booth without subwoofers makes no sense: the DJ will keep pushing the level looking for something the system simply cannot deliver.
- At live shows with drums and bass, so the band sounds the way it should.
- At large outdoor venues, where the low end is lost before everything else.
When not
For speeches, ceremonies, press conferences, conferences and background music, a subwoofer is unnecessary and can even get in the way: it adds boom in reverberant rooms and eats into intelligibility. In those cases the money is far better spent on microphones.
Placement
Where the subwoofers go completely changes the result
Bass is a long wavelength: it wraps around obstacles and reflects off walls and floors. That is why moving a subwoofer two metres can change the sound more than turning it up three decibels.
Grouped or spread out
Placing the subwoofers together in the centre of the stage gives more frontal punch and a heavier bass on axis, although coverage at the sides is worse. Spreading them to the sides or across several points gives a more even bass throughout the venue, which is what you want in a caseta (fair marquee) or a marquee where people are everywhere. On large dance floors they can be set up in a cardioid array so the bass does not spill backwards, towards the stage or towards the neighbours.
Phase and crossover frequency
The subwoofer and main speaker must work in phase in the range where they overlap. If they don't, they cancel each other out and you end up with a system that has less bass than with no subwoofer at all. Setting the crossover and phase takes minutes and knowing what you are doing, and it is one of the most audible differences between a professional set-up and an improvised one.
The floor and the neighbours
Bass travels through structures: in a function room inside a building, what sounds reasonable downstairs may be shaking the floor above. At urban events, on terraces and in residential courtyards it is wise to take measurements and bear in mind the noise regulations; if there is a sound limiter, the bass is the first thing to trip it.

Quick guide
This is a guide, not a rule: the venue and the type of music can push the number up or down.
| Event | Subwoofers | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Celebration of up to 100 people with dancing | One | Function room, small garden or terrace |
| Party of 100 to 250 | Two | Wedding with open bar, debutante ball, large birthday party |
| Caseta or marquee for 250 to 500 | Two or four, spread out | Better spread out than grouped |
| Verbena (street party) or live show in a town square | Four or more | Depending on venue depth and capacity |
| Speech, conference or ceremony | None | Gets in the way more than it helps |
What's included
What comes with the subwoofer
Phase and crossover tuning
Done on site, with the system set up. Without it, a subwoofer can take away rather than add.
Carefully planned placement
We decide whether they go grouped, spread out or in a cardioid array depending on the shape of the venue and where the audience is.
Cabling and processing included
With signal distribution, the processor and system protection, so it works without being pushed to the limit.
Realistic level control
If the venue has a sound limiter or neighbours nearby, the system is sized to sound good within that margin, not to keep cutting out all night.
Set-up and collection
This is heavy equipment. We deliver it, position it and collect it ourselves.
Works with what you already have
If you already have speakers, we can add just the bass reinforcement and tune it to your system.
Often rented with
Equipment that goes with bass reinforcement
Hardly anyone rents a subwoofer on its own: it is part of a party or live-music set-up.
Frequently asked questions
Subwoofer FAQs
Do I need a subwoofer for a wedding?
Not for the ceremony or the drinks reception. For the dancing, yes: it is the difference between guests listening to the music and getting up to dance. The usual approach is to set up the full system and bring in the subwoofer only for the party.
Does a subwoofer make the sound carry further?
Not exactly. It adds body and a sense of power, but reach comes from the main speakers and where they are placed. If the problem is that the sound does not reach the back of the venue, the answer is not a subwoofer but a bigger system or better coverage.
Does it bother the neighbours more?
Bass goes through walls more easily than treble, so yes, it is what is most noticeable outside. It is controlled through placement, level and, if needed, cardioid configurations that reduce what spills out backwards.
Is one enough or do I need two?
One is enough for a small celebration. From around 100 people dancing, two give much better coverage and the system works more comfortably, which shows in the sound quality all night long.
Can I rent just the subwoofer for my own system?
Yes, and we tune it to your speakers: crossover, phase and level. Tell us which speakers you have so we bring the right processing and cables.

Will there be dancing at your event?
Then let's talk bass. Tell us the guest numbers and the space, and we will tell you how many subwoofers you need and where to put them.
