Macarena district
Sound for events and parties in La Macarena
One name for two very different cities: the tight streets around the old city wall and the open housing estates to the north. Setting up in one area is nothing like the other.

How we set up here
Two areas, two kinds of logistics
To the south, hugging the city wall and the historic Ronda, the urban fabric is old and tightly packed. To the north, beyond the ring road, the city opens out into estates of apartment blocks with inner squares and wide streets.
Around the Puerta de la Macarena, Calle San Luis, the Resolana and the streets running down towards San Julián, the layout is old-town: short streets, narrow pavements and tricky traffic. There, set-ups are planned for a specific time, we unload quickly and move the vehicle away. In the northern estates it is the opposite: there are inner-block squares, sports courts and landscaped areas where the van can drive right up to the set-up point.
Inner squares and courtyards between blocks
Squares enclosed by apartment blocks make a great space for a neighbourhood party and a tricky one for sound: the level bounces off the façades and rises up through the courtyards. It is kept under control by aiming the speakers towards the centre of the space, never pointing the system at a façade, and tightening the low end. It also pays to announce the timetable in advance, because the event's audience and the neighbours are almost the same people, and everything goes more smoothly when the finishing time has been agreed.
Civic centres, schools and association premises
It is a district with a lively community and brotherhood (hermandad) life, and many events take place in municipal halls, civic centres and social clubs. These tend to be spaces with medium-height ceilings, a rectangular floor plan and hard surfaces, where a well-tuned basic sound system and quality microphones do the job. When there is a live performance, we add stage monitoring and some front lighting.

What gets celebrated
Summer evenings, May Crosses and neighbourhood events
In spring and summer the district fills up with open-air events, and in autumn and winter activity moves indoors.
As in so many Seville neighbourhoods, May brings Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses) and events organised by associations and residents' groups, and summer brings veladas (open-air evening fairs) with a caseta (fair marquee), a bar and live acts. For these set-ups the equipment has to withstand heat, dust and several hours of non-stop use, and the stage is usually a low platform with a roof or awning. At brotherhood events and pregones (traditional proclamation speeches) the PA system is what matters: the spoken word must be understood out in the street and at a distance, with no feedback and no boom.
The rest of the year brings comuniones (First Communion parties), christenings, birthdays and family celebrations in local halls and venues, as well as school and college events. The equipment is simple, but it helps to have someone deliver it who leaves it tested and explained before they go.

Frequently asked questions
Questions from the district
Can we set up in our estate's square?
If the space is council-owned, you need permission from the city council and, depending on the case, notification of the activity. We set up once the permit has been granted and help you with the technical details usually requested: power, timetable and area occupied.
What equipment do we need for a pregón (proclamation speech) in the street?
A speech system split across two points, a microphone with good response and feedback control, and a lit lectern if it is at night. What ruins a pregón is not a lack of power but the echo between façades: it is corrected with good placement and lower levels.
Is it a problem to set up near the city wall or listed buildings?
We cannot anchor anything to a protected element or lean structures against it. We set up with our own stands, weighted and kept clear of the wall. If the event is in a protected setting, the permit may require more detail: best to raise it well in advance.
