How a First Communion party unfolds
Lunchtime, a long afternoon and thirty children running around
The celebration begins when Mass ends, around midday, and carries on all afternoon. It's a relaxed format, with background music most of the time and two or three moments when the volume needs to go up or someone needs a microphone.
Drinks and lunch
For the first few hours the music is in the background. What you need is coverage, not power: a pair of well-placed speakers on tripods reach the whole room without forcing anyone to raise their voice to talk. If lunch is on a plot or in a garden, the sound has to be spread over more points, because outdoors it fades within a few metres.
The video and the speeches
Almost every First Communion has its photo video of the boy or girl. It comes across much better if the audio goes through the sound system rather than the laptop speaker, and if someone has checked beforehand that the file opens. For a few words from the parents or godparents, a wireless microphone passed round the tables is all you need.
The afternoon: the children
It's the most enjoyable part and the hardest to plan for. Children want to dance and they want to sing. A karaoke takes care of the whole afternoon, and if you've booked an entertainer, they will need a handheld microphone and a way to plug in their music. It's worth mentioning when you book so the channel is ready.
If the First Communion is at home
Many families celebrate at home or on a family plot. What matters there is that the equipment is easy to handle and doesn't depend on a socket at the other end of the garden. A battery-powered portable sound system goes wherever it's needed, runs for several hours and moves from the drinks area to the dance floor without cables.

What to plan for
Four things that save you headaches
- Where the sockets are. In function rooms it's rarely a problem; on plots and in gardens it is. If the nearest socket is far away, we either bring an extension cable or use battery-powered equipment.
- Whether the venue has a sound limiter. Some celebration venues have one installed. It doesn't stop anything, but it's worth knowing so we can set the system below the threshold and the music doesn't cut out mid-afternoon.
- Sun and heat. First Communions fall in April and May, and many are held outdoors. The equipment is never left in direct sunlight: we find shade or set it up under the marquee.
- Who will run it. If there's no DJ or entertainer, we leave the system switched on, with the volume set and explained to a family member. Nothing needs touching except the playlist.
If you want some atmosphere as well as sound, the most common additions are a few LED spotlights for the dance area or a projection screen for the video. For the afternoon party with music, a small DJ setup offers more options than a single speaker.
If you're celebrating a children's birthday the same month, the approach is similar: sound for birthday parties. And if it's a big celebration, with a function room and dancing into the night, it's closer to a private party.

Frequently asked questions
Questions from families
How much does a sound system for a First Communion cost?
It's one of the most affordable set-ups we do, because the equipment is small and installation is quick. The price depends on whether you need a microphone, karaoke or travel outside the city. We confirm it in writing beforehand, with no surprises: see how we calculate our prices.
Can we rent just one speaker and set it up ourselves?
Yes. For a simple system we deliver it set up and explained, and collect it when you're done. If the location is awkward or there are stairs to climb, we set it up ourselves.
Do we need a technician for a First Communion?
Usually not. We leave the system configured, with the volume set and the microphone tested. A technician is normally only booked if there's a live performance or a large set-up.
Do you have equipment with microphones for the children's entertainer?
Yes. We leave a wireless microphone channel ready plus an input for them to plug in their music. With two mics you can also do karaoke in pairs, which works better with children.
The First Communion is in a town in the province. Do you go there?
Yes, we cover the whole province. Check your town under service areas: travel is calculated by distance and shown in the quote.
