What it is for
When the problem is not the sound but the power
Some events can be handled with modest equipment but have nowhere to plug it in. That is where a self-powered system changes everything.
A portable sound system is a column or speaker with a built-in battery, amplifier, basic mixer and, almost always, a built-in wireless microphone receiver. Switch it on and it works: no cables to run, no fuse box to find and no need to ask permission to plug into anything.
Where it is used
- Guided tours and cultural routes around the Old Town (Casco Antiguo), monuments, museums and city itineraries, where the guide keeps moving and the group follows.
- Street and square events: presentations, neighbourhood activities, gatherings, openings and community group events.
- Parks, gardens and natural spaces: children's activities, sports, yoga, workshops, camps and outdoor celebrations.
- Roaming activities: street parades, romerías (pilgrimage festivals), tours and events with several stops.
- Venues with insufficient power, where there is a socket but the electrical panel cannot take any more load.
- Very short set-ups, where running cables would take longer than the event itself.
What it can and cannot do
Yes: clear speech for groups of up to a few dozen people, background music, announcements and voice-overs. No: a dance floor with bass, a concert or coverage for a large venue. For that you need a system running on mains power or a generator; the maths is in how many kW you need.
What's included
How we deliver a self-powered system
Real battery life
Units leave fully charged and we give you an honest estimate of hours based on the volume they will be used at. For long events, we plan a spare or charging between sessions.
Wireless microphone included
Handheld or headset. For guided tours, a headset is practically essential: the guide needs their hands free.
Music input
Connection for a phone, tablet or laptop, with the level set so the voice always sits on top.
Tripod or base
To raise the speaker above head height for large groups, or a low base if it needs to be moved around.
Designed to be carried
These are units one person can move. If the event is on the move, that matters more than power.
Multiple units can be linked
For long routes or large groups, two or more points can be spread out with the same source.
Choosing well
What to ask yourself before renting a battery-powered system
How many hours, really? A unit that advertises long battery life only delivers it at low volume. If the event is on a busy street and you need to turn it up, run time drops. We would rather under-promise and bring a spare battery or a second unit if the event is long.
How many people, and how far away? For a group of twenty around the guide, one unit is plenty. For a hundred people spread across a square, it is not: that is when it pays to step up to a PA system with several points.
Does it move or stay put? If the event is on the move, weight and ease of transport outweigh everything else. If it stays in one place, it is almost always worth running power and setting up a regular basic sound system, which gives you more for less money.
Is there background noise? On busy streets, at markets or in crowded areas, the voice has to compete. There, intelligibility and placement matter more than raw power.
A word about outdoor use
Hours of direct sunlight and electronics do not get on well, and neither does an August downpour. These units are robust, but it is wise to plan for shade and, if rain is possible, some protection. Plan it in advance, not once everything is set up.

Quick guide
| Event | System | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Guided tour of up to 30 people | One battery column speaker with headset mic | Easy to move between stops |
| Park activity, 50 people | Column speaker on tripod with handheld microphone | With music input |
| Event in a square, 100 people | Two self-powered points or a PA system | Better to spread out than to push one unit too hard |
| Street parade or route | Lightweight system, carried on a trolley or cart | With spare battery |
| Party with dancing | Not self-powered: mains power or generator | A battery cannot deliver the bass |

Frequently asked questions
Portable sound FAQs
How many hours does the battery last?
It depends on the volume. At speech level for a small group, a full day is usually covered; at high volume outdoors, considerably less. Tell us how many hours you need and we will prepare a spare if necessary.
Can I use it for a party with music?
For background music, yes. For a party with dancing, no: the battery cannot drive the bass and the result is disappointing. In that case you need mains power or a generator.
Does it work for a guided tour?
It is one of its main uses. With a lightweight column speaker and a headset microphone, the guide can speak comfortably and the group hears them without straining their voice for two hours.
Can it be used on the beach or in the countryside?
Yes, taking care with sand, dust and direct sunlight. Plan for shade and a stable base, and do not leave the unit exposed if there is any risk of rain.
Can I collect it myself?
Yes, this equipment is designed to fit in a car. We hand it over charged, tested and with the microphone paired and ready to go.
Do I need a permit to use it on the street?
For events organised on public roads and spaces, usually yes. We summarise it in permits for events in public spaces.
