What it is and when you need it
When people are less than five metres away
A monitor can't compete with an LED screen on size, or with a projector on price per metre. It wins on something else: sharpness at close range, set-up in minutes and zero maintenance during the event.
Where it fits
At trade fairs and stands, where visitors look from a metre and a half away and every pixel shows. In receptions and registration areas, displaying the day's programme or the venue map. In breakout rooms at a conference, repeating the signal from the main hall. At weddings and celebrations, for a photo slideshow during the drinks reception. And as a stage confidence monitor, so the speaker can see their own presentation without turning round.
Monitor, TV and professional display
A domestic TV has a tuner, menus designed for the living room and switches itself off. A professional display is built to run for many hours non-stop, boots straight into the video input, can be mounted in portrait and doesn't interrupt playback with pop-ups. At a multi-day event, you notice the difference on day two.
How to choose
How many inches for your viewing distance
The rule we use: to read text comfortably, the viewer's distance shouldn't be more than about four times the screen height. With video and images you can stretch that considerably.
| Size | Reading distance | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 43" | Up to 2.5 m | Small stands, reception, digital menu, speaker confidence monitor |
| 55" | 2,5 – 3,5 m | The most requested size at trade fairs. A good balance of price and presence |
| 65" | 3,5 – 4,5 m | Large stands, meeting rooms, waiting areas |
| 75" – 86" | 4,5 – 6 m | Breakout room, conference foyer, showroom |
| Over 6 m | Projection or LED | Beyond that point, a monitor is no longer worth it |
Mounts and positioning
How the screen is supported
Floor stand
This is the standard: a tripod or column with a wide base, adjustable height and internal cable routing. It can be set up anywhere without touching the walls, which is exactly what exhibition venues and most hotels require. For stands there are slim-column versions with a flat base that take up very little space.
Totem and portrait mounting
The screen rotated 90 degrees, in portrait format, works very well for signage, personalised welcome messages and listings. If you're going to use portrait, the content has to be designed in portrait: rotating a 16:9 video inside a vertical screen leaves two huge black bars.
Flown and tabletop
On stands with their own structure, the screen can be hung from the stand's joinery or from truss; on meeting tables or on a stage, it goes on a low stand to act as a confidence monitor. We always check two things: where the power cable runs and that nobody can trip over it.
Common mistakes
What goes wrong on a stand with screens
Playing a video with sound on a small stand. The noise at a trade fair is constant; your video's audio only makes the neighbouring stand turn theirs up. If you need sound, keep it directional and low, or use a system designed for stands.
Relying on the TV's built-in USB player. Each brand supports some codecs and not others. If the video matters, we test it on the actual screen beforehand or bring an external media player.
Not planning for looping. A video that ends and sits on a black screen with the manufacturer's logo becomes your stand's shop window for the next eight hours. Playback needs to loop and start automatically when the screen is switched on.
Forgetting power and the network connection. Every screen needs its own socket, and at exhibition venues the stand's contracted power is limited. It should be factored in alongside the rest of the installation.
Choosing on price and ending up with too few inches. Nobody can read a 43" screen from five metres. Before deciding, measure where visitors will be looking from.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about monitor rental
Can I rent just one screen?
Yes. A single screen with its stand for a two-day trade fair is a perfectly normal rental. We also supply sets of several units when the stand or venue calls for it.
Can it be mounted vertically?
Yes, on a totem stand. Remember that your content must be designed in portrait format; if the video is landscape, it will look small with two black bars.
How does my video get onto the screen?
Via HDMI from a laptop or media player, or from a USB drive if the format is compatible. We test it beforehand with your file to make sure it starts automatically and plays on a loop.
Can it be used to relay the main room feed at a conference?
Yes, that is a common use. The signal comes from the live video production desk and is distributed to the screens in overflow rooms, the foyer or the press area.
When is a monitor the right choice, and when is an LED screen better?
Below around 86 inches and with the audience close by, a monitor. If you need a larger surface, if the audience is far away or if there is a lot of ambient light, an LED screen.
Do you set up within the exhibition centre's opening hours?
Yes. We work within the venue's set-up and take-down windows, including overnight slots, and bring whatever documentation the organisers require.
